What is a Stroke?

A stroke happens when blood flow to a portion of the brain stops.

A stroke is sometimes called a ‘brain attack’.

If the blood flow is stopped for longer than a few seconds, the brain cannot get blood and oxygen resulting in death of brain cells and causing permanent damage to the brain.

Other names for a stroke are Cerebrovascular Disease, Cerebral Infarction, Cerebral Haemorrhage etc.,

Causes for a Stroke

Two major kinds of strokes – Ischemic stroke and Hemorrhagic stroke.

Occurrence of Ischemic stroke when a blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain is blocked due to blood clot. This may happen because        1. A clot may form in an artery that is very narrow. This is called ‘Thrombosis stroke’

  1. A clot may break off from any place in the blood vessels of the brain or from any other part of the body and move to the brain. This is called an ‘embolic stroke’

Ischemic strokes may be caused by clogged arteries, fat, cholesterol, and other substances which collect on the artery walls forming plaque.

Hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel in a part of the brain becomes weak and bursts open, causing blood to leak into the brain.

Stem cell therapy for stroke

Numerous clinical trials and studies have been conducted all over the World to know whether stem cell therapy can offer a cure /relief to stroke victims. In a recently concluded preliminary phase 1 clinical trial – 9 stroke patients aged 60 to 80 years where injected bone marrow stem cells (autologus) directly into the damaged parts of the brain showed mild to moderate improvements in walking, use of the hands and other activities. There were also no side effects reported. The trial will now progress to the phase II of the trial after the approvals from the Regulators.

In another study conducted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, India – 12 stroke patients were injected with bone marrow stemcells (autologus) into  the antecubital vein(in the forearms near the elbows). It was found that more than 60% of the patients who were injected with stemcells showed improved activities such as walking, using the toilet, taking a bath, dressing and eating independently within 6 months. PET scans and MRI on the patients who received the stemcells showed that they did not suffer any side effects. The study shows that stem cells are a safe and feasible therapy for acute strokes. However a bigger study with larger groups is required before it can be confirmed.
